With a high caliber of jury members and set to be a two stage competition,  the Association for the Promotion and Exhibition of the Arts in Lebanon (APEAL) is planning to open a museum of modern and contemporary art in Beirut by 2020.

APEAL is searching for a talented architect who identifies with the project’s values and understands the significance of designing a cultural institution in the current urban, social, economic and political context of the country and region. A two-stage competition has been devised to identify Lebanese architects, based locally and abroad, who might be interested in submitting designs.

1-STAGE ONE:
Lebanese origin architects based in Lebanon or abroad (registered with or associated with an architect registered with the Order of Engineers and Architects in Beirut or Tripoli). Based on the submissions, a shortlist of up to ten architects will be established.

2-STAGE TWO:
The shortlisted architects will be given further briefing on the site master plan and museum program and invited to envision strategies for the site massing and a preliminary concept design for the museum, along with technical submissions. The design concepts for this stage will be treated anonymously.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF A WINNER
An international jury will review the shortlisted submissions of the site master plan and design concepts and recommend the winner of the design competition and two runners-up for recognition.

THE JURY
An independent jury of renowned international and local experts will be assembled, chaired by Lord Peter Palumbo, Chair of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and includes: Zaha Hadid, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Julia Peyton-Jones, Rodolphe El Khoury, Lamia Joreige, Lord Richard Rogers, and Fares Al Dahdah, in addition to representatives from APEAL and Université Saint-Joseph.

APEAL is looking for an exceptional architect who is able to commit to full design to this project while offering the architectural fees on a pro bono basis, as a contribution towards establishing this cultural institution.
